Hardcore GNLA militant killed in Meghalaya gun fight

Guwahati, Jan 11 (IBNS)  : One hardcore militant belonging to Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed during a gun fight with security forces in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district on Thursday, officials said.

Based on intelligence inputs about  the presence of a militant group, the troops of East Garo Hills district and army jointly launched operation in the  Kakwaduragre area of the district.

“When the troops  reached the area, the militants  fired upon them prompting the forces to retaliate.  One militant was killed on the  spot and other members of the group  managed to flee from the remote area,” a top police official said.

The slain militant was identified as Matchalang M Sangma. He was a close associate of GNLA C-in-C Sohan D Shira.

Security personnel  recovered one AK-56 rifle, 97 rounds of  live ammunition and other things  from the encounter spot.

GNLA is active in Meghalaya and some parts of lower Assam.
