Harbhajan Singh writes to Bengal Guv Bose, CM Mamata Banerjee over RG Kar rape-murder probe

New Delhi/IBNS: Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party MP Harbhajan Singh has written an open letter to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing "deep anguish" over the delay in the delivery of justice for the victim in the RG Kar rape-murder case.

Harbhajan posted the letters on his X handle saying, "With deep anguish over delay in justice to the Kolkata rape and murder victim, the incident which had shaken the conscience of all of us, I have penned a heartfelt plea to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal , Ms. @MamataOfficial Ji and Hon'ble @BengalGovernor urging them to act swiftly and decisively.

"The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full weight of the law, and the punishment must be exemplary. Only then can we begin to restore faith in our system and ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again and we create a society where every woman feels safe and protected. We must ask ourselves—if not now, when? I feel, the time for action is now."

In his letter, the spin bowler said, "This unspeakable act of violence, which shook the conscience of all of us, is not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society.

"It is a reflection of the deeply rooted issues within our society and a blatant reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and action by the authorities."

More than a week ago, the news of the rape and murder of the junior doctor was reported from RG Kar Hospital bringing the state administration under scanner over the alleged cover-up and fishy investigation by police before the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the Calcutta High Court.

Though the Kolkata Police has arrested one civic volunteer- named Sanjoy Roy- in a quick response to the crime, doctors who are on strike as a protest suspect there were more involved in the incident.

The hospital's initial message to the victim's parents that their daughter committed suicide and the renovation work near the crime scene within hours after CBI's takeover of the case have raised doubts over the state administration's intent.
