New Delhi/UNI: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Saturday lauded the teaching community for their immense contribution to society, saying that in Indian culture, the Guru has been elevated to a higher pedestal than God.

In a message on Teachers' Day, he said, "I wish all the countrymen on Teachers Day and salute all the gurus. Let us thank our teachers, counsellors and parents on the occasion of Teacher's Day, with whose blessings we have learned a lot."

Wishing them a happy Teachers Day, he said in a series of tweets, "Teachers, words are not enough to describe your contribution towards nation building & making students a better global citizen.

"In the sublime cultural traditions of India, the teacher has been elevated to a higher position than God by saying 'Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu' and 'Acharya Devo Bhava."

"Come, today, on the auspicious occasion of Teacher's Day, we greet our gurus and get their blessings."

He said honours were given on the day to mark the birthday of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the great educationist, philosopher and former President, and a Bharat Ratna recipient, by observing September 5 as 'Teacher's Day'.
