Goa CM defends PWD Minister's "sexist comment"
Panaji, July 2 (IBNS): Defending Goa's PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar's alleged sexist remark, state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said media distorted his comments.
"When media distorts my own statement, how can I trust you (media). What he told me is nothing big and offensive. I read different versions in media," Parrikar said while addressing mediapersons.
He said there is no imposition on bikinis.
"Bikinis are for swimming. One cannot certainly wear bikinis to temple. There is no problem in Goa regarding this. As long as it does not become a public problem, I don't think there is any problem. It should not be a public problem, if it is, then we will interfere," Parrikar clarified.
Earlier in the day, Parrikar reportedly sough an explanation from the PWD Minister after he allegedly made some sexist comments on women's dress code and warning them against wearing short attires or going to pubs.
Sudin Dhavalikar has reportedly said it is against Indian culture for women to go to pub or wear short dresses.
Speaking to CNN IBN channel, he had reiterated it: "I appeal to all women in Goa not to drink. It is not good for health also. We will crack down against pubs. Women wear short dresses and go to pubs, they go and drink. This is not good."
"Women from outside Goa come and visit pubs. Visiting pubs and drinking is against Goan culture," he said.
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar himself also faced flak by drawing an analogy of rape to doing business in India.
He said if someone commits rape, he has to face one inspector but for setting up industrial units one has to face many, a comparison that earned him the condemnation of women rights and other groups.
