Prayagraj, Sep 19 (UNI) In view of the intermittent rains in the plain areas of Uttar Pradesh, over 150 villages have submerged due to the floods in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj while thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and move towards safer areas.

Official sources on Thursday said due to the water, being released from the dams of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, both the rivers are flowing above the danger level. In Phaphamau, Ganga is flowing 35 centimeters above the danger mark of 84.73 meters to 85.08 meters whereas in Naini, Yamuna has crossed the red mark and is now flowing at 85.00 meters.

Due to the Rasulabad cremation ground being submerged, funeral rituals have been disrupted there. Cremations are being done on the roads in Daraganj due to the floods.

The effect of the approximate 38 lakh cusecs of water which was released from dams and barrages in the recent days is now being seen in both the rivers which are destroying thousands of acres of crops and making thousands homeless.

As many as 35 colonies and around 150 villages in the city including Rajapur, Nevada, Kacchar, Beli, Mau Saraiyya, Neenva Kacchar, Draupadi ghat, Shankar ghat, Rasulabad, Shivkuti, Chilla, Salori, Baghada, Sadiyabad, Daraganj Kareli, Karailabad and JK Ashiyan have been hit by the floods. Ten relief camps in the city and one in the rural area have been set up wherein 3,000 flood-hit people have reportedly sought shelter till Wednesday night.

Sources said that more than 15,000 houses have been surrounded by floodwaters while directions have been given to evacuate the alluvial areas completely. The district administration has formed teams and intensified the relief work.

Several teams of the NDRF, SDRF and police teams have also been formed while the administration has brought in over 50 boats to rescue trapped people and take them to relief centers.

Owing to the constantly rising water levels of both the rivers, the boats of the fishermen have been stopped and strict action will be taken against those not following the orders, officials said.

Demands have been made for two companies of the Flood PAC for the relief work while police officials gave important directions to police, PAC and divers deployed in the Sangam area on Wednesday.

Sources said that only rescue teams will conduct inspections at the night time and any other boat caught venturing will be seized immediately.
