Fresh trouble for Abhishek Banerjee! Calcutta HC orders TMC MP to appear before CID in forgery case by 6 pm today
Kolkata/IBNS: In fresh trouble for Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed him to appear before the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters by 6 pm in connection with the alleged forgery case, media reports said.
However, in a relief to the TMC MP, the court directed the CID not to take any coercive or stringent action against him for three weeks.
Abhishek, who had travelled to New Delhi to attend the INDIA bloc meeting, is scheduled to return to Kolkata on Thursday.
The court's direction comes two days after a CID team conducted searches at the Trinamool Congress office located adjacent to the residence of former West Bengal Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee in the Kalighat area.
What Is the Case About?
The controversy revolves around a resolution submitted to the West Bengal Assembly in May 2026 concerning the appointment of senior TMC leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition, along with appointments to other Assembly posts.
The document reportedly carried the signatures of around 70 TMC MLAs.
However, rebel legislators, including Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, alleged that their signatures, along with those of several other MLAs, were forged or used without their consent on the resolution submitted to the Assembly Secretariat.
Why Is Abhishek Banerjee Being Questioned?
According to investigators, Abhishek Banerjee is a key figure in the probe as the disputed resolution was allegedly forwarded to the Assembly Speaker under his authority as the TMC's national general secretary.
The CID has maintained that his statement is crucial to establishing how the document was prepared, authenticated and ultimately submitted to the Assembly Secretariat.
The state investigating agency has issued multiple summonses to Abhishek Banerjee in recent weeks.
However, he has not appeared before investigators so far, citing health concerns, official engagements in New Delhi and ongoing legal proceedings before the Calcutta High Court.
CID Tightens Probe
The latest court order marks a significant development in the politically sensitive case, which has intensified amid reports of growing dissent within the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The CID has already questioned several legislators, collected relevant documents and conducted searches at locations linked to the party as part of its ongoing investigation into the alleged forgery of MLA signatures.
