Five UP cops suspended over 'allegations of mismanagement' in Hathras case

Lucknow/IBNS: Five policemen, including the Superintendent of Police, of Hathras district have been suspended in connection with the fatal gangrape case in Uttar Pradesh amid nationwide outrage and protests.

An initial report by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the fatal gangrape of the 19-year-old victim by four men in Hathras district, called for the cops' suspension over allegations of mismanagement.

The investigators have also asked for a narco-analysis, popularly known as lie-detector tests, of all those involved with the case including the arrested suspects and the family of the victim.

The Yogi Adityanath government has come under attack after the 19-year old was dragged by her dupatta, gangraped by four men, got her spinal cord damaged and her tongue cut.

Two weeks after the incident, which occurred on Sept 14, the girl succumbed to her injuries at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday morning.

In an even more shocking incident in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Uttar Pradesh, the law and order of which has often come under the scanner, the dead body of the girl was cremated by police officials in the dead of night denying the family members a look at the victim for the last time.

Nationwide outrage and intense criticism of the UP government along with demands of justice for the Hathras victim had also poured out on social media.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose resignation has been demanded by various opposition politicians and angry people on social media, had constituted the SIT to probe into the heinous crime and also ordered a trial against the accused in a fast-track court.

On Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and their supporters joined the protest at the national capital's Jantar Mantar demanding justice for the 19-year-old Hathras victim.

Hundreds of people including leaders from opposition parties gathered at the protest to demand stringent punishment for the accused.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the case.

Besides taking cognisance of the case, the court in its 11-page order heavily relied on the reportage of the cremation of the dead victim by police without the consent of family members.

The court has summoned the top government and police officials on Oct 12, by which the State has been asked to respond.
