Few have such courage: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Rahul's resignation as Congress chief

New Delhi, July 4 (IBNS): Reacting to her brother Rahul Gandhi's resignation as the Congress president, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has called the leader "courageous".

In a tweet, Priyanka, who is the Congress general secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh, said on Thursday, "Few have the courage that you do @rahulgandhi. Deepest respect for your decision."

Ending days of suspense and anxiety, Rahul on Wednesday formally submitted his resignation as the Congress president, weeks after his party once again received a jolt in the Lok Sabha polls.

He also shared the resignation letter on his Twitter page.

Rahul, who became the Congress president in 2017, took responsibility for his party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls and said he would continue to fight the ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP once again defeated the Congress to form the central government for the second consecutive term.

Rahul said the Congress Working Committee should elect a new party president.

In a tweet where he shared his resignation letter, Rahul said: "It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. I owe the country and my organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love. Jai Hind ."

Congress workers have been insisting him to review his decision and continue as the president.

Meanwhile, a new Congress president will be chosen "within a week", party sources have told NDTV.

Meanwhile, Congress veteran Motilal Vora, who is believed to be close to the Gandhi family, has been appointed as the interim Congress president.
