Farmers rally in Maharashtra today with demand of land reforms

Mumbai, Nov 21 (IBNS): Thousands of farmers in Maharashtra will take out a rally in the state on Wednesday to press for their demand of land reforms, media reports said.

The rally will begin from Thane and end at Mumbai, the state capital. On Thursday, the farmers will march to Azad Maidan til their demands are met.

The farmers, who are struggling to deal with the agrarian crisis and natural calamity, are demanding an appropriate implementation of the loan waiver package, which was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2017.

Prathibha Shinde, the general secretary of Lok Sangharsh Morcha (LSM), which is organising the rally, has been quoted by Hindustan Times, "We have been consistently asking the state government to fulfil our long-standing demands but the response has been lukewarm. We are forced to agitate."

"We are taking maximum care to ensure that Mumbai citizens are not inconvenienced."

Due to the rally, traffic is expected to be hit in Mumbai on Wednesday.

A similar protest had occurred earlier this year when around 35,000 farmers, who were led by All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), rallied from Nashik to Mumbai. The protest was called off after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Maharashtra government had accepted all the demands of the peasants.
