EPS announces free Covid-19 vaccine in poll-bound Tamil Nadu amid row over Bihar BJP's promise

Chennai/IBNS: Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has promised free Covid-19 vaccines for people in Bihar in its poll manifesto, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami, who will face elections next year, on Thursday made a similar pledge triggering a widespread controversy.

"Once Covid-19 vaccine is ready, it will be provided to all people of the state free of cost," the CM said as quoted by NDTV.

Taking a jibe at Tamil Nadu's ruling party AIADMK and the BJP, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "The Government of India just announced India’s Covid access strategy. Kindly refer to the state-wise election schedule to know when you will get it, along with a hoard of false promises."

No vaccine is yet in sight as Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has repeatedly said the country can expect a cure from multiple sources in early 2021.

Various Covid-19 vaccine candidates are presently in various levels of trials.

The elections in Bihar will begin on Oct 28.
