Engine fire forces SWISS flight to abort in Delhi, 6 injured

Six passengers were injured after a SWISS International Air Lines flight aborted takeoff at Delhi airport following an engine fire incident early Sunday, officials said.

The injured have been admitted to hospital.

Emergency evacuation on runway

All passengers were evacuated using emergency slides after the aircraft came to a halt on the runway. Authorities said the flight was bound for Zurich when the incident occurred.

Flight LX147, operated by an Airbus A330, began its takeoff run around 1:08 am when one of its engines failed and caught fire.

The crew immediately rejected the takeoff, preventing the aircraft from becoming airborne.

Over 230 people on board

The airline said there were 228 passengers and four infants on board at the time. Crew members were not injured in the incident.

While most passengers exited via emergency slides, stairs were arranged for a few individuals who were unable to use them. All passengers were safely evacuated.

Airline activates emergency response

SWISS confirmed it has set up a task force and is assisting affected passengers with rebookings and hotel accommodation.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline said technical experts will travel to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and determine the cause of the engine failure and fire.

Authorities are working closely with the airline as part of the investigation.

Passengers being supported

SWISS said its local teams are providing on-ground support to passengers and maintaining direct contact to manage the aftermath of the incident, which it described as stressful for everyone involved.
