'EC has no power': SC puts on hold poll body order revoking Kamal Nath's star campaigner status

New Delhi/IBNS: In a relief for the Congress veteran, the Supreme Court on Monday put on hold the Election Commission (EC)'s order revoking the star campaigner status of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath for the byelections in the state, media reports said.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde said the poll body has no power to revoke the status.

The top court's decision after Nath had filed a plea.

The poll body had said that Nath's star campaigner status was being revoked for "repeated violation of model code of conduct" and for "complete disregard" of warnings to him.

Nath, being a senior leader of a political party, had repeatedly "breached ethical and dignified behaviour", the EC had said in its order.

The former Madhya Pradesh CM had been earlier warned by the poll body for his "item" jibe at a woman Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

During an election campaign, Nath triggered a controversy calling Imarti Devi an "item".

By-elections in Madhya Pradesh will be held on Nov 3 to fill 28 vacant seats in the state assembly.
