EAM S Jaishanker visits Kashmir, meets families of students stranded in Iran

Srinagar/UNI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived here on a surprise visit on Monday and interacted with the families of students whose children are stranded in Iran in view of coronavirus scare, official sources said.

The visit comes at a time when parents of hundreds of stranded students and other citizens of Kashmir and Ladakh are demanding them to be brought back.

They said the Minister met about 25 families of students who are stranded in Iran at Kashmir International Conference Centre on the bank of Dal Lake in Srinagar on Monday. “During the interaction, Mr Jaishanker assured the families that the Government of India is making all efforts to bring back the children from the coronavirus affected country,” the sources said.

The Union Minister also visited the Regional Passport Office (RPO) located on the banks of the famous Dal Lake in Boulevard area of the city. “The Minister will also visit Passport Seva Kendra in Baramulla district of north Kashmir,” they said.

“Efforts underway for return of Indian pilgrims in Qom #Iran.Screening process has started & follow up arrangements are being discussed with Iranian authorities. This is top priority & Embassy team @india_in_iran is fully engaged on this,” Mr Jaishankar wrote on twitter on Sunday.

“Our Emb @India_in_Iran continues to maintain close contact w Indian fishermen in #Iran.No case of #COVID19 reportd among them. Ensuring tht they hv adequate supplies. Will continue to monitor their welfare,” he added.

Iran is reportedly the third largest effected country by coronavirus after China and Italy. Iran has reported 49 new deaths, taking the toll of people killed by the virus to 194.
