Osaka, June 28 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on sidelines of the G20 Summit and discussed issues related to cooperation in 5G technology, defence and trade.

This was the first meeting between Modi and Trump since he took oath as the Prime Minister of India for a second term.

MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted: "Enriching the global strategic partnership PM @narendramodi had an open & productive meeting with POTUS @realDonaldTrump on the margins of #G20 Summit. The two leaders discussed various aspects of mutual interest with a focus on cooperation in 5G, defence & security & trade."

Modi is currently in Japan to attend the G20 Summit.

Apart from meeting Trump, Modi also took part in the second 'JAI' - Japan-America-India Trilateral meeting.

It was attended by Japan PM Shinzo Abe and Trump.

Officials said the discussion during the meeting focused on how the three countries can together work together towards an open, stable and rule-based Indo-Pacific region.

Modi described the meeting as 'productive'.

"Today’s meeting of the JAI Trilateral was a productive one. We had extensive discussions on the Indo-Pacific region, improving connectivity and infrastructure development. Grateful to PM @AbeShinzo and President @realDonaldTrump for sharing their views as well," the Indian PM tweeted.
