Delhi Police oppose riot-accused Safoora Zargar's bail plea on ground of 'pregnancy'

New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi Police on Monday opposed the bail plea of student activist Safoora Zargar, who is accused of conspiring the riot in the national capital in Feb 2020, on the ground of her "pregnancy", media reports said.

Safoora, an M.Phil student of Jamia Millia Islamia, was arrested on Apr 10.

The student, who is now four months pregnant, has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

In a status report before the Delhi High Court in response to the bail plea of Safoora, the police said the student activist was receiving adequate medical care in Tihar jail.

Police added no exemption has been granted to release pregnant inmates who are accused of "heinous offences."

The Delhi Police said Safoora has been kept in a separate cell, downplaying the chances of her contracting the pandemic Novel Coronavirus.

Safoora, the media coordinator of Jamia Coordination Committee, had challenged the trial court's Jun 4 rejection of her bail plea.

After Solicitor General Tushar Mehta took time for more instructions, the Delhi High Court adjourned the case till Tuesday.

How the riot took place?

The Delhi 2020 riot took place in the northeastern part of the national capital in the last week of February, leaving more than 50 people from both Hindu and Muslim communities dead.

The riot had started from Jaffrabad where a sit-in-protest by women against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2020, was progressing along the stretch of Seelampur-Jaffrabad-Maujpur road.
