Dahi Handi participants can't be less than 18, rules Bombay HC

Mumbai, Aug 11 (IBNS) Ahead of the festive season, the Bombay High Court on Monday directed that children under 18 years could not participate in the Dahi Handi Festival.

The court  also ruled that height of Dahi Handi cannot be more than 20 ft.

A division bench comprising of Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode directed the state to issue a circular in connection with the  age bar and restriction on height of human pyramids by Tuesday.

The court gave the ruling after hearing various public interest litigations connected to the issue.

The ruling came at a time when a 14-year-old died while practicing Dahi Handi in Navi Mumbai last week.

The Dahi Handi festival involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot filled with buttermilk which is tied at a convenient height. This event is based on the legend of the child-god Krishna stealing butter.

It is mostly popular in the state of Maharashtra.

Krishna Janamashmtmi  will be celebrated on Aug 18.
