CPM urges Himachal govt to compensate Fani-hit farmers

Shimla, Jun 5 (UNI): A district unit of the CPM on Wednesday called the state government to compensate the farmers who have suffered massive loss to the standing crops of stone fruits, affected by the wind and hailstorm caused by cyclone Fani last month.

Secretary of district party unit Sanjay Chauhan said in a statement: "Apple, plum, pear almond, apricot, peach, mango and other crops suffered massive loss due to wind and hailstorm causing economic loss to many farmers in the district."

He also urged the government to order revenue survey of loss so that affected farmer could be compensated.

Most of the affected farmers hail from Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur Una and Solan district as Sainj, Banjar and Ani area of Kullu, Rampur, Theog, Nerwa, Baghi Rohru of Shimla, Bangana area of Una, wherein the thunderstorm that knocked down the unripe fruit on the ground.

"High cost of production and plant material left many farmers in economic distress as as most of them borrowed crop loans to grow the crops," said Mr Chauhan further appealing the government to halt the recovery of crop loan from the affected farmers.

Himachal Pradesh is considered the fruit bowl of country.
