COVID-19 outbreak: Death toll touches 9 after Tibetan refugee dies in Himachal Pradesh
New Delhi/IBNS: The death toll in the number of fatalities from Coronavirus outbreak in India rose to nine on Monday evening after another fatal case was reported from Himachal Pradesh.
The latest victim is a 69-year-old man who returned to Himachal Pradesh from the US. He dies at a hospital in the Himachal Pradesh.
"A 69-year-old Tibetan refugee, who died at a hospital in Tanda in Himachal Pradesh earlier today, has been tested positive for coronavirus. He returned from the US on March 15," State Additional Chief Secretary (Health) RD Dhiman told media.
According to some TV channels, the victim even hid his travel history from the government.
Earlier in the day, West Bengal confirmed the first Covid-19 death as a 57-year-old man, who was undergoing treatment in Kolkata's Salt Lake AMRI Hospital under ventilation support in a critical condition, died of cardiac failure, taking the death count in India to eight.
According to reports, the man fell sick on Mar 13, days after returning to his Dum Dum residence from Bilaspur and he was shifted to AMRI hospital from a local nursing home on Mar 16.
Days ago, his swab sample was sent to NICED and it tested positive for Covid-19.
Senior health officials said that eight persons who came in close contact with him, including his family members and AMRI doctors as well as medical staff who checked him up, have been admitted to the isolation ward of M.R. Bangur hospital in south Kolkata while their swab samples have been sent to NICED for tests.
As of Monday night, India has 467 confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
In a bid to restrict the surge of COVID 19 in the country, the Indian government on Monday announced all domestic flights will stop operating in the country from Tuesday midnight.
This is the lastest step taken by the government to check Coronavirus outbreak in the nation, which has the world's second-largest population.
Already 75 districts across the country are witnessing locked down barring essential services till the end of the month.
All passengers trains have been stopped by the government till Mar 31 while no international flights are now not allowed to land in India for a week which began on Mar 22.
All inter-state buses have been stopped.
India witnessed a 14-hour long "Janata Curfew" which continued from 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday to contain the spread.
