Coronavirus: Total positive cases in India jump to 147, global death toll above 7,500

New Delhi/IBNS: The total positive Novel Coronavirus cases in the country rose to 147 on Wednesday while the global death toll from the virus has crossed 7,500.

A 34-year old soldier became the first Army person to be infected by the virus. 

As per the last update, Maharashtra records the maximum number of positive cases (41) followed by Kerala (27).

14 people, who had tested positive, have cured while three have so far lost their lives.

The three deaths took place in Karnataka, Delhi and Maharashtra.

A 64-year old man, who had a travel history to Dubai, passed away at Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital on Tuesday. 

The man's wife and son have also tested COVID-19 positive.

Earlier a 69-year old woman had died of Coronavirus, declared as 'pandemic' by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in Delhi.

Prior to the death of the woman in Delhi, a 76-year old man from Karnataka's Kalburgi had died.

Joining Odisha, West Bengal became the second eastern state of India to report a positive case on Tuesday. 

Senior officials of West Bengal's Health and Family Welfare department on Tuesday night confirmed that an 18-year-old youth from south Kolkata, who recently returned from England, has tested positive for COVID-19, making it the first case in the state.

According to reports, the youth returned from the UK on Sunday (Mar 15) and after falling sick, he was admitted to the isolation ward of Beliaghata ID hospital with COVID-19-like syndromes on Monday (Mar 16).

"His droplet sample was sent to National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED-ICMR) in Kolkata where his sample was tested positive for novel coronavirus," a senior official of state's health department told IBNS.

After suspending travel visas, India has banned even the Indians from travelling to India from European Union (EU), UK and Turkey effective from Mar 18. 

With the ban coming into effect, no airline will board Indian passengers coming to India.
