Coronavirus cases in India jump to 26,496, death toll rises to 842

New Delhi/IBNS: India witnessed 1,990 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, setting a new record in the single-day spike, which took the total tally to 26, 496. The death toll has mounted up to 824, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Of the total deaths, 49 were registered from different parts of the country in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra, being the worst-hit, reported India's 13.8 per cent of COVID-19 cases while 47.6 per cent infections of the state are from Mumbai.

Gujarat is the second most affected state in the country.

Delhi has recorded 11 per cent of the country's total coronavirus cases.

The cases have seen the biggest spike this week as on last Sunday, the total number of cases was 16000.

However, the Centre claimed that the recovery rate from the infection is high with maximum improvement in the last 10 days.

More than 5,800 coronavirus patients have recovered so far.

Starting Sunday, an intense lockdown has been initiated in five cities of Tamil Nadu to curb the spread of Coronavirus.

The four-day intense shutdown is applicable in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore from Sunday 6 am, which will continue till 9 pm on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami declared that in Tirupur and Salem, restrictions will be intensified for three days, starting 6 am on Sunday till 9 pm on Tuesday.

During this intense lockdown period, people will not be allowed to step out of their home even to buy vegetables and groceries, which was earlier permitted 6 am to 1 pm.

Meanwhile, the global death toll in coronavirus related cases crossed 2 lakhs.

The total number of COVID-19  infected cases across 185 countries touched a whopping number of 2,896,746.

The United States has the maximum number of cases with the tally reaching 936,154 including 53,755 deaths.
