Congress should get Leader of Opposition post: Sonia Gandhi

| | Jul 07, 2014, at 06:19 pm
New Delhi, July 7 (IBNS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the Leader of Opposition post should go to Congress party, which has only 44 MPs in the Lok Sabha, which is less than one tenth of the total strength of the House required for the same, after their electoral drubbing at the hands of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"We should get the Leader of Opposition's post. If not, we will see," Sonia Gandhi told reporters at Parliament, according to an NDTV report.

Gandhi said as the largest party it should get the status.

Congress earlier indicated they could even go to court over the issue.

The BJP said the Congress must have at least 55 MPs to get the status.

Earlier, the first budget session of the Narendra Modi government began on Monday with a ruckus over the price rise in Lok Sabha forcing an adjournment of the lower house till 2 pm.

While the government agreed to a price rise discussion in Rajya Sabha, the opposition demanded to know what the government is doing to contain price rise in Lok Sabha.

Opposition leaders shouted and demanded explanations on price rise.

The session will have 28 sittings.

While there is a heavy majority for the ruling BJP and NDA in Parliament, the opposition also closed ranks to attack the government on the issue of price rise.
