Congress attacks PM Modi over coal shortage
New Delhi/UNI: As several states witnessed power cuts due to coal shortage, the Congress took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his statement in 2017 when he said shortages of coal in power plants were not seen anymore.
"There is no coal in the power stations... This is not any breaking news but 24×7 news every day," chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala Surajewala tweeted.
"Amidst the scorching heat across the country, there has been an outcry due to severe power cuts. More than a quarter of the power plants are closed and more than 700 trains have been cancelled," he said. "What kind of 'new approach' is this?"
He shared a video of the Prime Minister from 2017 where he said there were no more reports of coal shortage from power plants under his government and that India has become "power surplus".
Modi had said this was possible because of the "new approach" of the government.
Power plants in several states are facing a coal shortage.
Railways have cancelled over 753 trips of passenger trains to prioritise transportation of coal.
