Committed to implementing Citizenship Amendment Bill but with consultation: Modi in Assam

"We are committed to implementing Citizen Amendment Bill. But we will consult with the all the communities of the society," the Prime Minister said weeks after protests had hit Assam over the bill.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to allow Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian illegal migrants not to be deported.

Accusing the Congress of not thinking about the minorities including Hindus in Pakistan, Modi said: "Congress has a history of creating trouble. In 1947, the country was divided on the basis of religion but they failed to think about the minority in Pakistan. The persecuted Hindus and Sikhs are now taking refuge in India. They have now become stateless."

Will pass triple talaq bill in parliament, says Modi

Trying to reach out to Muslim women in the election season, Narendra Modi once again said he is committed to end triple talaq, a practice of giving instant divorce to Muslim wives by their husbands.

"People have made up their mind to elect Narendra Modi for the second term. We will pass the triple talaq bill in the parliament after returning to power," Modi said.

Though the triple talaq bill, which aims to end the practice of instant divorce, has been passed in the Lok Sabha, it is yet to be passed in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament. BJP lacks the majority in Rajya Sabha.

Five Lok Sabha seats of Assam went to polls in the first phase on Thursday.
