New Delhi, Dec 17 (IBNS): The Centre on Monday approved the necessary changes to make sharing of Aadhaar details voluntary for mobile phone connections, bank accounts and school admissions.

This comes after the Supreme Court of India ruled that the Aadhaar card could not be made mandatory for people to obtain benefits from welfare schemes of the central government.

The central government had earlier announced that the Aadhaar card would be made mandatory for obtaining benefits from around 30 central welfare schemes which even includes the mid-day meal given to schoolchildren.

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley had said the government was trying to make a single identity card for all citizens of India.

Jaitley had stressed on the importance of Aadhaar card claiming it was safer.
