CBI considering fresh legal option to have former Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar in its custody

Kolkata, May 28 (UNI) CBI probing the multi-crore rupees Saradha chit fund scam is considering a fresh legal option to have former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in its custody for questioning after the IPS officer skipped Monday's summon, citing more time to appear before the central investigating agency.

Rajeev Kumar, who was removed from the ADG/CID post by the Election Commission of India before the last phase Lok Sabha poll and posted in the Union Home Ministry, was reinstated by the Bengal government on Sunday, but reportedly did not join his Bhawani Bhawan office here.

The CBI on Sunday issued a summon notice directing Rajeev Kumar to appear at 10 AM on Monday, but the IPS officer sent his men to submit a letter seeking more time to appear.

He is reportedly on a six-day leave from Monday last.

The CBI accused Rajeev Kumar of tampering vital documents while heading a team of SIT during 2013-14 in the Saradha case.

The CBI is now considering fresh legal action to have the accused police officer in its custody, and for this, the agency was in consultation with senior criminal lawyers in the city.

Senior CBI officials have been in consultation with some criminal counsels to have fresh legal action to get the officer in its custody, sources said today.

The CBI, meanwhile, also summoned two police officers of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate at the CGO Complex today for questioning.

Among the police officials were Dilip Hazra and Provakar Nath, but the latter has appeared so far.
