New Delhi/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have won one seat each in the byelections held in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat.

The by-elections to five assembly seats across four states were held on June 19.

AAP's Gopal Italia has won from Gujarat's Visavadar seat while BJP's Rajendra Chavda won from Kadi.

In Punjab, the ruling AAP won the lone seat of Ludhiana West that went to bypoll.

Congratulating AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora for his win in Ludhiana West, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann posted on X, "Congratulations to everyone on the Aam Aadmi Party’s spectacular victory in the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election. This win with a huge lead is a clear indication that the people of the state are extremely pleased with our government’s work. We are working day and night with complete honesty and without any discrimination for the progress and prosperity of Punjab.

"We will fulfill every promise made to Punjabis during the by-election on a priority basis. Heartiest congratulations to Sanjeev Arora ji. Also, a big congratulations to the entire leadership and volunteer team who worked tirelessly day and night for this victory."

The Congress-led UDF defeated the LDF in the Nilambur constituency which too went to bypolls on  June 19.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) consolidated its position winning in Kaliganj where BJP appeared to be a distant second.

After TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed won the seat, Mamata wrote on X, "In the by-election of the Kaliganj Assembly constituency, people from all religions, all colors, all castes, and all strata of the area have exercised their voting rights and blessed us overwhelmingly. I bow my head in gratitude to them."

The byelections in Kerala and West Bengal were closely watched as the two states will head to polls in 2026.
