‘I have good dress and good food now’: Tamil Nadu woman, who alleged torture in Kuwait, rescued by Indian Embassy

Vanitha, from Kallakurichi district, had earlier appeared in a video with her head covered and hands folded, appealing to Indian and Tamil Nadu authorities to help her return home.

In a subsequent video recorded at the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, she appeared in a bright green kurta and thanked the embassy for coming to her aid.

“I am Vanitha, who had sought the Indian Embassy's help to rescue me. Now, I am in the Indian Embassy. Thank you, Indian Embassy. I have good dress and good food now,” she said.

Vanitha had alleged torture in Kuwait

Vanitha had travelled to Kuwait around three months ago to work as a domestic help.

In her earlier video, she alleged that she was being tortured and said she had not received her salary for two months.

“They torture me here. I appeal to the Collector madam and Superintendent of Police madam to rescue me and get me to India, my motherland. They've not paid my salary over the past two months. I can't stand it anymore,” she had said.

Her appeal was subsequently brought to the attention of authorities in Tamil Nadu, who confirmed that she was from Kallakurichi district and traced her family.

Family had sought her rescue

Following the authorities’ confirmation, Vanitha’s family filed a complaint seeking her rescue and return to India.

Her mother, Vennila, had alleged that a recruitment agent deceived her daughter after arranging the Kuwait job.

She said Vanitha, who has a son and a daughter, travelled overseas expecting to work as a domestic help but later allegedly faced mistreatment.

The family’s appeal added urgency to efforts to locate Vanitha and secure assistance for her.

Kallakurichi police coordinated with authorities

Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police Shahnaz had earlier confirmed that officials had located Vanitha’s family and were coordinating with the relevant authorities to facilitate her rescue.

“We have confirmed Vanitha is from this district. We have located her family and received a complaint. We have connected them with the right authorities to follow it up and rescue her,” Shahnaz told the media.

The latest video from the Indian Embassy in Kuwait indicates that Vanitha has since been brought under the embassy’s care following her earlier SOS.
