Begusarai, May 7 (UNI): A local court today granted bail to senior BJP leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh in a case of violation of model code of conduct for a controversial remark against minorities while campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Begusarai.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Thakur Aman Kumar granted bail to Singh after he filed a bail petition following his surrender before the court in connection with the case. The court accepting the bail petition, ordered his release on bail.

Singh during a speech in an election meeting on the GD College campus in Begusarai had said that country would not forgive minorities if they did not chant Vande Mataram.

"How could minorities continue to live in the country if they did not have respect for their motherland?" he had asked.

Singh is BJP's candidate from Begusarai seat where polling was held during 5th phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 29.
