Bharti announces measures to prevent recurrence of Kedarnath tragedy

New Delhi, June 16 (IBNS): Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Monday announced some important measures to prevent recurrence of Kedarnath type tragedy which occurred a year ago.

Speaking to media persons in New Delhi she said her Ministry will take up the repair of embankments of the rivers which were damaged during the tragedy under Flood Management Plan.

Bharti said her Ministry will also take cooperation of Ministries of Environment and Tourism in this task.

The Minister said Central Water Commission which gives advance warning of flood in the rivers has now been instructed to give warning about any increase in the water level of lakes of more than 50 hectares size and located in high altitude.

The Commission will pass on these information to the concerned states.

She said that a nationwide tree plantation drive and public awareness programme will be held on Tuesday on the first anniversary of Kedartnath tragedy.

Tree plantation drive will be held at Gangotri, Haridwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Navdeep and Ganga sagar. The main function will held on Tuesday in New Delhi.
