Bengal BJP leaders Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh attacked during visit to flood-hit areas, hospitalised

Both the leaders were injured as they were chased, pushed and attacked by the locals.

Murmu's face was seen drenched in blood as the protesters broke the car windshield throwing stones.

Ghosh, the BJP chief whip in the state assembly, was pushed and as he got into the same car, locals hurled shoes at the windshield which was later shattered by the protesters.

The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the attack on the two leaders as the political tension over the flood escalated on Monday.

Both were rushed to the nearby hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack and called the incident "outright appalling."

West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP strongman Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X, "Mamata Banerjee is on full Panic Mode.
She has realized it (quite late) that the People of West Bengal have despised her inhuman act of 'Dancing at Carnival with Celebrities' when North Bengal was reeling under floods and landslides, with many People losing their lives and thousands left shelterless.

"In contrast, @BJP4Bengal MLAs & MPs were on ground doing their bit to provide relief to the affected People. So, she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons belonging from the 'Special Community' and incited them to attack the BJP MPs and MLAs so that they can be refrained from engaging in relief work."

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya wrote on X, "TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region to help with relief and rescue efforts after devastating rains, floods, and landslides.

"While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are missing in action. Those actually helping the people, BJP leaders and karyakartas, are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished."

Bengal flood

On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, heavy rain battered the hills with Mirik being the worst-hit zone in the northern part of the state.

At least 28 people have died and over a dozen are still missing.

Thirteen bodies were recovered only from Mirik, which is known for its serene natural beauty, tea gardens, and peaceful lakeside setting — making it a popular getaway in the Darjeeling hills.

Road connectivity in key routes has been disrupted in the region.

The hill station usually remains very busy in this part of the year with tourists pouring during the festival season.

Officials warned that the death toll may rise as rescue operations by the Darjeeling District Police continue amid persistent bad weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued two red alerts overnight for all six districts of Sikkim, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 40 kmph.

By early morning on October 5, the alert was downgraded to orange, but officials said rainfall is likely to continue until October 7.

Authorities have also cautioned that downstream flash floods may occur in parts of north Bengal due to heavy rainfall in neighbouring Bhutan.

In 24 hours from 8 am on Saturday, Darjeeling received 261 mm of rain, Cooch Behar 192 mm, Jalpaiguri 172 mm, The Times of India reported.

Gajoldoba in another North Bengal district Jalpaiguri received massive 300 mm of rain.
