Kolkata/IBNS: In another crossover just weeks ahead of the West Bengal election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukul Roy's brother-in-law Srijan Roy joined the ruling Trinamool Congress on Wednesday.

Srijan Roy, who played a very active role in 2011 and 2016 assembly and 2014 Lok Sabha elections for the Trinamool, had joined the BJP in 2019, the year in which the saffron brigade registered an unprecedented success in the state politics.

Returning to his old party in presence of state minister and Trinamool leader Bratya Basu, Srijan Roy said, "Under the guidance of Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee we will be able to achieve secularism in Bengal. Other party leaders can choose whatever party they want. I am choosing Trinamool Congress."

Mukul Roy, who was formerly the number two person in the Trinamool, had joined the BJP in 2017.

Apart from Srijan Roy, the Trinamool on Wednesday inducted lawyer Jyoti Prakash Chatterjee and Bengali actor Nilanjana Mazumder.

Chatterjee, who has represented the Trinamool MPs and MLAs in the High Court, said, "BJP wants to divide Bengal and our battle is against the Jungle Raj.”

"It is an honour for me to work under the leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee," said Mazumder.

Over the last weekend, several key Trinamool leaders including former West Bengal Forest Minister Rajib Banerjee joined the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following the footsteps of turncoats like Suvendu Adhikari, Mukul Roy, Arjun Singh.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the much-awaited high octane state poll will be declared by the Election Commission within 7-8 days.

Speaking on the government's Swasthya Sathi card at a rally in Alipurduar, Banerjee, who heads the ruling Trinamool Congress, said, "...The election will be declared within 7-8 days. Not much time is left..."
