New Delhi/IBNS: After the two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel were fired by Iran, the Indian government on Wednesday issued a travel advisory for Iraq and asked people to avoid non-essential travels to the country.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted, "Travel Advisory for Iraq. In view of the prevailing situation in Iraq, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Iraq until further notification. Indian nationals residing in Iraq are advised to be alert and may avoid travel within Iraq."

"Our Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate in Erbil will continue to function normally to provide all services to Indians residing in Iraq."

The US Department of Defence on Wednesday said more than a dozen ballistic missiles, which were fired by Iran, hit at least two airbases housing US troops in Iraq. It said the missiles targeted two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil.

The US said it will take all necessary measures to protect and defend country's personnel, partners, and allies in the region.

The incident took place hours after top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, who was killed during a US airstrike, was buried.
