Attack on Nadda's convoy: Bengal's top bureaucrats to skip Centre's meeting over law and order situation
Kolkata/IBNS: The West Bengal government on Friday said its top bureaucrats won't be attending the meeting called by the central government which was supposed to discuss the law and order situation in the state, media reports said.
The Home Ministry of India has called West Bengal's Chief Secretary (CS) and Director General of Police (DGP) for a meeting on Monday, after the president of the country's ruling party met with a violence during a political programme in the state on Thursday.
Kalyan Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP and a key member of the ruling Trinamool Congress, said on Friday, "No officer of the central government has jurisdiction to summon the CS and DGP. The law and order is a state subject and not of central government."
"The state government is answerable for any query over law and order only to the assembly and not anybody else," he added.
Banerjee claimed BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda, whose convoy was attacked, was given adequate security by the state.
The attack on Nadda and other BJP leaders was allegedly carried out by the Trinamool activists at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district.
The attack has triggered a fresh faceoff between the Trinamool and BJP with both the parties blaming each other for the violence in the poll-bound state.
Countering the claims of the saffron party, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said, "If they can't draw crowds, they do nautanki (mischief). They may have planned the entire thing. I have ordered a complete inquiry into the incident because I can't tolerate lies all the time."
