Assam: Two Flying Squad members held with Rs 50,000 in Guwahati
Guwahati, Apr 1 (UNI) Two members of a Flying Squad under the Election Commission have been arrested in Guwahati on allegation of extorting money while conducting checking in the city.
The duo, Dipankar Hazarika, a ranger in Soil Conservation department, and Ali Kamal Hussain, a gram sevak in Chandrapur block development office, were arrested by Gorchuk police in Guwahati, based on a complaint.
Police said the two accused, who were members of Flying Squads appointed as per Election Commission of India guidelines to monitor movement of unaccounted cash during elections, had found Rs 2.5 lakh on the complainant yesterday.
The complainant, who hails from Barpeta district, explained to them that he had brought Rs 2 lakh with him and had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from his brother, who lives in Gorchuk, to make payment for a vehicle.
The two officials, however, refused to believe him and extorted Rs 50,000 out of the person, while letting him keep the rest of the amount.
The complainant, along with his brother, approached Gorchuk police station in the evening yesterday and based on their FIR, the two officials were called to the police station.
The duo had shared Rs 25,000 each among themselves, which was seized by the police, and they were arrested.
They were produced before the court today, which remanded them to 14 days judicial custody.
