Assam government appeals ULFA (I) to join peace talks
Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam government on Tuesday urged anti-talk United Liberation Front of Asom (Independence) or ULFA (I) and its chief Paresh Baruah to join peace talks with the government.
Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said during a press conference held in Guwahati that, the government is now ready to talk with ULFA (I) and other insurgent groups.
“We have requested the ULFA (I) and Paresh Baruah to come forward to take part in the peace process. The Assam government and Manipur government have appealed to the anti-talk fractions of various militant organizations of the two states including Paresh Baruah led ULFA (I) to come into the peace process. The centre, Assam government and Manipur government are willing to negotiate with all the anti-talk militant groups and the centre is ready to talk with the militant organizations,” Sarma said.
He also said that the entire North-Eastern region has now become one of the most peaceful regions of our country.
It is to be mentioned that, third Bodo peace accord was signed amongst the centre, Assam government and all four fractions of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) on Monday in New Delhi in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Terming the new accord as a historic one, the Assam minister said that, permanent peace environment has come into the Bodoland after signing the Bodo accord and this is a final and comprehensive solution of Bodo problem recognizing territorial integrity of Assam.
The Assam minister also said that over 1500 cadres of all four fractions of NDFB will lay down their arms on Jan 30.
“On January 30, more than 1500 NDFB cadres will lay down their arms before Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the function will be held in Udalguri or Guwahati,” Sarma said.
He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah are likely to attend the celebration function of Bodo peace accord on February 7.
“The Assam government has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to attend the celebration function,” Sarma informed.
