As COVID cases spike, full lockdown in TN from June 19 to 30, announces Palaniswami

Chennai/UNI:  As there has been a massive rise in the number of corona positive cases, Tamil Nadu chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today announced total lockdown in Chennai and its three neighbouring districts from June 19 to 30, with strict restrictions.

A decision to tighten the lockdown was taken after chairing a meeting with expert medical panel and at a meeting of the State Cabinet.

''Based on the discussions in these meeting, strict lockdown will be in force under Disaster Management Act, 2005, for 12 days from early morning 0000 hrs of June 19 to midnight of June 30 to prevent further spread of COVID-19'', the Chief Minister said in a statement.

With the reporting of 11502 new cases across the country, the number of COVID-19 cases in India now touched 332,424, as  per Ministry of Health data released on Monday.

The death toll due to the disease has reached 9520.

There are 153106 active cases in the country at present.

So far, 169797 people have recovered from the highly infectious disease that has spread across the globe.
