Arvind Kejriwal, Amit Shah meet to review COVID-19 situation in Delhi

Director AIIMS Dr Randeep Guleria and other senior officers are also present in the meeting which comes after the Supreme Court last Friday pulled up the Delhi government over the "horrendous, horrific and pathetic" COVID-19 situation in the national capital.

This is the second meeting between Shah and Kejriwal in less than a week over the pandemic situation.

Slamming the Delhi government for its kind of handling of infected patients, the Supreme Court said had said: "COVID-19 patients are treated worse than animals. In one case, a body was found in the garbage. Patients are dying and nobody is there to even attend to them."

It had added, "The situation in Delhi is horrendous, horrific and pathetic. (There is a) very sorry state of affairs in its hospitals that aren't giving due care and concern to the bodies. Patients' families aren't even informed about deaths. Families haven't been able to attend the last rites too in some cases."

The union territory of Delhi is one of the worst-hit cities in India.  The national capital has registered around 38,958 cases so far and 1,214 deaths.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said the virus tally in the national capital may touch 5.5 lakh by the end of July.

After their last meeting, Kejriwal had said that the Union Home Minister had "assured of all the cooperation."

Earlier, several people in Delhi were turned away by the hospitals stating they were over-run with patients.

Following this, Kejriwal had last week announced that government and some private hospitals will be reserved only for residents of the national capital.

However, the order was later overruled by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal stating that everyone should be treated in Delhi without discrimination.
