Arnab Goswami, arrested in suicide case, sent to 14-day judicial custody

Mumbai/IBNS: Indian journalist Arnab Goswami, who has been arrested here in connection with a two-year old suicide case, was sent to a 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday night, media reports said.

Goswami, the editor-in-chief of Republic TV, has been arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 53-year old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother couple of years ago in Maharashtra, a state ruled by an opposition party.

The senior journalist was seen in some visuals being taken into a police van on Wednesday morning.

An Alibaug court had rejected Goswami's charge that he was physically assaulted by police while being arrested and also police's demand for a 14-day custody.

The senior journalist, whose arrest has been severely condemned by the country's ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is expected to file a bail plea before the Bombay High Court.

The court will also hear Goswami's plea to strike off the case against him on Thursday.

Goswami has been having a bitter tussle with the Maharashtra government and police since the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Republic TV had questioned the handling of Rajput's death, which was later cleared of having a foul play by All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

The English news channel had a faceoff with Mumbai Police after Goswami's channel was alleged to have fudged television ratings.

Following the arrest in connection with the two-year old case, several Union Ministers and ruling BJP leaders have blasted the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress government in Maharashtra and called out the ruling dispensation for allegedly creating an emergency-like situation in the state.
