Amid violence in state, Bengal Guv Keshari Nath Tripathi meets Modi, Shah
New Delhi, Jun 10 (IBNS): Amid the ongoing post-poll violence in his state, West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Monday.
Interacting with media, Tripathi said his meeting was out of courtesy.
When asked about whether he had spoken to Modi and Shah over the situation of West Bengal, Tripathi said: "I just informed them about the general situation of the state."
Reacting to the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s criticism of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)'s directive, Tripathi said: "Let her (West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) do her job."
The fresh conflict broke out in Basirhat's Nayjat, which is about 70 km from Kolkata in the Sandeshkhali area, on Saturday.
According to reports, the clashes erupted over removing of party flags from public places in the Hatgacha panchayat area.
A huge police force was sent to the area to restore peace. However, the BJP has alleged that the police didn't react to the situation when the clashes took place.
Four BJP workers and one TMC worker were reportedly killed in the clash.
According to reports, the TMC was holding a booth-level meeting at a marketplace in Hatgacha when the clashes broke out with BJP workers, who were in the vicinity.
Angry barbs and insulting exchanges between the two groups led to violence ultimately.
A fresh tussle between the police and BJP leaders occurred on Sunday after the police disallowed the saffron leaders to take two deceased's bodies to Kolkata. Later, the BJP had agreed to hold the cremation in Basirhat only.
Following the killing of BJP workers, the party is observing a 'Black Day' across the state on Monday.
The party has called for a 12-hour 'bandh (strike)' in Basirhat area of the state.
The MHA, which is now headed by BJP national president Amit Shah, sent a directive to the West Bengal government but the ruling TMC came down heavily upon the Centre.
Holding a press conference in late evening on Sunday, TMC principal secretary Partha Chatterjee said the MHA letter is nothing but a political statement. "Our government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will react accordingly," Chatterjee told media.
