The London-bound Air India Boeing Dreamliner, which crashed soon after its takeoff from Ahmedabad, left 275 dead, of whom 241 were onboard and 34 on the ground, the Gujarat Health Department said on Tuesday, providing an official figure for the first time.

Since the June 12 crash, there had been no official announcement about the total number of deaths. The authorities had said a figure could be arrived at only after the DNA matching was completed.

Officials of the health department said all the bodies have now been recovered, and so far, 260 bodies have been identified through DNA matching and six by facial recognition.

Among those who died were 120 men, 124 women, and 16 children, while 256 bodies have been handed over to families so far, said reports.

The DNA identification of the remaining bodies is still underway.

The Boeing Dreamliner had started losing height and crashed seconds after takeoff, landing on the residential campus of BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar, located just outside the airport perimeter.

Only one passenger out of the 242 on board, a British-Indian man seated in 11A, miraculously survived that crash

The cause of the crash is not yet known, as the black box is still being examined.

Air India has responded to the crash, announcing safety and prevention measures that include cutting down on the use of its wide-body planes for international flights by 15 percent. The cuts will be implemented between now and 20 June and will continue thereafter until at least mid-July.
