Srinagar/UNI: Security forces shot dead four Lashkar-e-Toiba militants in a gun battle in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Thursday, officials said.

The gunbattle had erupted at Badigam, Zainapora in Shopian during a cordon and a search operation in the area following an input about militant presence.

“As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunfight. In the gunfight, two terrorists were killed in the initial gunfight. Two more were killed later,” a security official said. Police said the four were affiliated with LeT.

"So far, four (4) local #terrorists of proscribed #terror outfit LeT #neutralised in #Shopian #encounter. Search is still going on," a police tweet said, quoting Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Vijay Kumar.

On Wednesday, a minority community member Satish Kumar Singh was shot dead in the Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, two Army men were killed and at least two others were wounded, when their vehicle on way to the Shopian encounter site met with an accident.

"A Tata Sumo carrying soldiers from 44 RR Chowgam Camp was on its way to encounter site at Badigam. The driver lost control over the vehicle due to some technical fault & it skidded off the road. Four soldiers were injured and two among them succumbed," a senior police officer in Shopian said.
