3 killed in J&K militant attack

Srinagar, Aug 13 (IBNS) Ahead of the Independence Day, two policemen and a civilian were killed as militants attacked a police vehicle at Galendar area of Pampore in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Wednesday.

Official sources told IBNS that militants opened heavy fire upon a police team escorting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of IRP 11 battalion Abdul Hameed of Keegam Shopian. Two security guards of the officer and a civilian were seriously injured in the attack.

All the injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospital where all the three including the pedestrian succumbed to injuries.

The slain have been identified as civilian Manzoor Ahmed Kasab and the policemen head constable Mohammad Yaqoob and Mehraj-ud-Din.

They said that after carrying out the attack, militants decamped with a carbine rifle from the spot.

The DSP escaped unhurt in the attack, sources said.

The police vehicle was on way to south Kashmir's Anantnag district from Kargil.

According to sources, the police team led by DSP Abdul Hameed was deputed to Kargil on the eve of Prime Minister Narrender Mod's visit and was returning back towards his battalion headquarter in south Kashmir.

Meanwhile, army and SOG have cordoned off the area and started search operation to nab the attackers.

Meanwhile, Hizbul Mujhadeen has claimed the responsibility for the attack.
