New Delhi/IBNS: At least 14 people have been arrested in connection with a violent clash that took place between two communities in North-West Delhi's Jahangirpuri area after stones were pelted at a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday.

Nine people, including eight police personnel and a civilian, were injured in the stone-pelting and the clash.

Among those injured is Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Medhalal Meena. He has suffered a bullet injury in his hand.

His condition is now stable, police said told the media.

Aslam, who allegedly fired the shot, is among those arrested and a countrymade pistol was seized from him.

According to reports, more suspects have been identified using CCTV footage and videos on social media and efforts are underway to arrest them.

Police have registered a case under sections relating to rioting, attempt to murder and Arms Act.

Ten teams of officers from the Crime Branch and Special Cell have been formed to investigate the matter.

According to the FIR, the rally was passing by a mosque when Ansar, one of the arrested accused, allegedly started arguing with those participating in the rally.

The altercation soon turned into a clash with both sides starting to throw stones at each other, the FIR says.

Following the violence, police kept vigil in Jahangirpuri and several other sensitive areas in the city on Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, a heavy force of CRPF and Rapid Action Force have been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control.

Police have also organised a meeting of the local peace committee and asked them to appeal to people to keep the peace. They were also requested to counter rumour and misinformation and were assured of a fair probe into the clashes.

Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana on Saturday said that it's not just Jahangirpuri but other adjoining and sensitive areas have also seen clashes.

In a tweet, Asthana had said that strict action will be taken against rioters and appealed to the people to not pay heed to rumours and fake news on social media.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah too spoke to Asthana and Delhi Police's Special Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Dependra Pathak on Saturday.

He had directed them to take necessary action in wake of the violence and handle the matter sensitively.

Condemning the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Saturday said, “The incident of stone-pelting in the procession in Jahangirpuri, Delhi is highly condemnable. Strict action should be taken against those who are guilty. Appeal to all people. Maintain peace by holding each other's hand.”
