106 killed in Kerala temple fire

Thiruvavanthapuram/Kolkata, Apr 10 (IBNS) At least 106 people were killed and scores others were injured as a fire broke out at Puttingal temple in Kerala's Kollam district on Sunday, making Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the site.

Modi visited the state with a team of burn specialists. He met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy & local administration officials.

"PM @narendramodi at the site of the tragedy in Kollam with CM Oommen Chandy & other officials," PMO India tweeted.

He also visited the Kollam district hospital.

"PM @narendramodi meeting CM Oommen Chandy & local administration officials. Health Minister @JPNadda is also present," read another tweet posted by PMO India.

The fire started at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, after a spark from a burst cracker fell on top of other crackers kept separately on the ground.

Around 15,000 people witnessed the spectre, people who had gathered to see the night long fireworks.

Condoling the incident, PM Modi had tweeted, "Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending & shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured."

Similar tweets emerged from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress VP Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his Kerala counterpart Oomen Chandy, all of whom condoled the loss.
