India's envoy to UN TS Tirumurti takes over as Chair of Counter Terrorism Committee

| @indiablooms | Jan 05, 2022, at 06:02 pm

United Nations, Jan 5 (UNI) TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, has taken over as Chair of the Counter Terrorism Committee for 2022.

The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate tweeted the news, along with a short bio.

“The new Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee for 2022 is H.E. Mr. T. S. Tirumurti @ambtstirumurti, Permanent Representative and Ambassador @IndiaUNNewYork,” it posted.

India is a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council and its two-year term ends on December 31, 2022.

On January 1, India voted in favour of a resolution to renew the mandate of the CTC Executive Directorate, and asked nations to remain united against the “tendency of labelling terror acts based on its motivation” and said that such categorisation will lead the global community back to the pre-9/11 era of “my terrorist” versus “your terrorist”.

“As the Chair of CTC for 2022, India will make determined efforts to further enhance the role of CTC in strengthening the multilateral response to counter-terrorism, and more importantly, ensuring that global response to the threat of terrorism remains unambiguous, undivided and effective,” India said in its explanation of vote to renew the CTED mandate.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established in 2001 in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
