Kolkata/IBNS: In a close contest with her former lieutenant and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee won from Nandigram as the results of the state assembly elections are declared on Sunday, according a news agency report.

Mamata, who leads the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has won by 1,200 votes, reported news agency ANI.

UPDATE: Amid the news that Mamata Banerjee has won the Nandigram seat in a cliffhanger against her former lieutenant and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Suvendu Adhikari, reports from the constitutency said the counting is still on and the result has not been declared officially.

Mamata was trailing in earlier rounds of vote counting but she picked it up later.

The TMC is heading for a landslide victory as the party is ahead in 215 of 294 seats.

The BJP, which was apparently posing a challenge to Mamata, is lagging behind with 76 odd seats.

Adhikari, who led the 2007 Nandigram land movement that catapulted the TMC to win in 2011, had earlier challenged Mamata to defeat her by 50,000 votes.

In Dec 2020, Adhikari, who was a key TMC man, crossed over to the BJP, which has inducted a number of turncoats ahead of the elections.
