PM Modi pays tributes to Bharat Ratna MGR on his birth anniversary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday Spaid tributes to Bharat Ratna MGR on his Jayanti.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, "Bharat Ratna MGR lives in the hearts of several people. Be it the world of films or politics, he was widely respected."

"During his CM tenures, he initiated numerous efforts towards poverty alleviation and also emphasised on women empowerment. Tributes to MGR on his Jayanti," Modi said in his message.

Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran, popularly known as M. G. R., was an Indian politician and film actor who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years between 1977 and 1987.

He was also a philanthropist and a humanitarian icon.

In 1988, M.G.R. was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously.
