New Delhi, Aug 25 (IBNS): Former Indian Finance Minister and BJP leader Arun Jaitley's last rites were performed with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat here on Sunday.

Despite rains, senior party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had assembled at the venue to pay their last respects to the ex-Indian Defence and Finance Minister.

Jaitley's mortal remains were carried from the BJP headquarters to the Nigambodh Ghat on a flower-decked gun carriage.

Thousands of mourners paid their last respects during the 8-km stretch journey amid chants of 'Jaitley ji amar rahein' (long live Jaitley ji).

A chief trouble shooter of the first Narendra Modi government, Arun Jaitley passed away at the age of 66 at AIIMS after losing the battle with protracted illness.

He breathed his last at 12:07 pm yesterday.

A lawyer by profession, Jaitley is survived by his wife Sangeeta, a son and a daughter who also joined the legal profession.

He was admitted to the AIIMS on August 9 with complaints of breathing problems.
