Bengaluru, June 5 (IBNS): The Janata Dal (Secular) has withdrawn its candidate for the Jayanagar assembly seat in Karnataka and has decided to back the Congress nominee.

The election for the said seat is scheduled to take place on June 11.

The Congress has fielded Soumya Reddy to contest the election from this seat.

JD(S) candidate Kalegowda was earlier supposed to fight the election from the seat.

Sowmya Reddy, having a master's degree in environmental technology from New York Institute of Technology, is the daughter of former Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

This is her first assembly election.

Though the Congress and the JD(S) fought the recently concluded Karnataka assembly elections separately, they stitched an alliance to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which emerged as the single largest outfit, away from power.

The Congress and the JD(S) together formed the Karnataka government with the support of 117 MLAs.

With the Congress' support, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy sworn-in as the new Karnataka Chief Minister.
