Live Blog: Uttarakhand tunnel collapse rescue ops hit final stage; Elaborate preps to evacuate 41 trapped workers

The final phase of the rescue mission at the Silkyara tunnel collapse site, where 41 workers have been trapped since November 12, is currently underway. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) anticipates that the rescue operation will be successfully concluded within the next few hours or by Friday, media reports said.

With only 10 meters remaining in the operation, the rescue team is gearing up to insert and weld pipes to create a safe passage for the workers' escape.

International Tunneling Expert Arnold Dix said that the vertical drilling, access roads, and sites required for the ongoing rescue operation in Uttarkashi have been readied.

"The vertical drilling is all prepared, as in all the sites prepared, the access roads prepared, everything's prepared, and decisions being taken shortly about what to do with the vertical drilling. But all of the different access routes affect each other," Dix was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Trapped workers likely to be be rolled out in wheeled stretchers

News agency PTI reported, citing Atul Karwal, the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), that the trapped workers will be evacuated one-by-one on wheeled stretchers through a large pipe that is being drilled to reach them.
